Heating Options

  • (1) Hayward Natural Gas or Liquid Propane 200K BTU Pool Heater: Reliable heating for comfortable swimming, regardless of the season. Our pricing always includes running a gas line.

    • The Hayward Natural Gas or Liquid Propane 200K BTU Pool Heater is typically optional.

  • (1) Hayward Electric 120K BTU Pool Heater / Chiller: Provides versatile functionality, offering both heating and cooling options to maintain your pool at the perfect temperature.

Choosing between Gas/Propane & Electric

When deciding between a gas pool heater (like the Hayward 200K BTU Natural Gas or Liquid Propane model) and an electric heat pump/chiller (such as the Hayward 120K BTU Electric Heater/Chiller), the choice often comes down to usage habits, budget, and seasonal expectations.

Gas heaters excel at heating pools quickly—making them ideal for homeowners who want to heat the pool on demand or use it sporadically throughout the cooler months. A 200K BTU gas heater can raise pool temperatures significantly in just a few hours, regardless of outside conditions. However, this convenience comes with a higher operating cost, as gas prices (especially propane) tend to be much steeper than electricity. Gas heaters are also slightly more susceptible to wear over time due to combustion components, though they typically last 5–10 years with proper maintenance.

On the other hand, electric heat pumps operate more efficiently and cost-effectively over the long term—especially in mild to warm climates where they can draw heat from the ambient air. While slower to heat a pool (often taking 24–48 hours for significant temperature changes), they are well-suited for maintaining a steady temperature throughout the swim season. Additionally, heat pump units often double as chillers, allowing them to cool the water in peak summer months—a feature gas heaters don’t offer. Though the upfront cost may be higher, the energy efficiency and dual functionality of heat pump/chillers make them an attractive option for homeowners planning consistent use.

Ultimately, gas heaters are best for quick, occasional heating, while electric heat pumps are better suited for consistent, cost-effective temperature control over time.
